Green Year’s Resolution February; Update

We’re already well over ¬†two weeks into February, so it’s time for an update on the Green Year’s Resolution. The goal was to reduce our energy use by 10 %. The average weekly energy use in our home was about 67 Kwh. So we need to get below 60 Kwh a week in order to reach our goal.

To be perfectly honest with you, I haven’t really been putting much effort into this resolution yet. We’re very busy renovating our bedroom, so it’ll be finished before the baby is born. Needless to say, I’ve had different priorities. However, this doesn’t mean I haven’t been paying closer attention to the energy I use.
I try not to have the heat on all day. I make sure to unplug appliances when not in use. And I take extra care to turn of the lights when I leave a room, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

I was a bit nervous when I checked the smart thermostat this morning. I would hate to have to tell you I didn’t accomplish anything for the resolution yet. So when I finally saw the results…..

I was really kind of pleased! The first week of February, we only used 57.5 Kwh. Well within our goal. The second week, I got a bit more careless and we used 62.9 Kwh. On average that’s 60.2 Kwh a week! This means if we keep doing things this way, we’ve almost reached our goal!
Of course things can always be better, and I will use the last two weeks of the month to make a bigger impact on our energy use. I think if I start using the smart wall plug, I can reduce it by much more. But that’s just speculation of course.
I’ll be back with some hard numbers at the end of the month, so be sure to check back in.
