3 Reasons I Use A Dishwasher

When trying to live a greener life, using a dishwasher is probably not the first thing on your mind. However, there are some great advantages to using a dishwasher instead of hand washing your dishes, and I’m here to tell you all about it.

1. Comfort
6206864791_8e043d1417_bThis is really the reason anyone uses a dishwasher. But there’s more to it than you might think. Not having to scrub your plates can be bliss, especially when you hate doing the dishes like me. But have you thought about the clutter? When you get a proper loading and unloading routine down, you will never have to have dirty dishes on your counter-top or in your sink. You can place all the dirty dishes immediately in the dishwasher when you’re done with them. This makes your kitchen so much more tidy and easier to keep clean, thus saving you time and cleaning products.

2. Saving energy and water
Research has shown us that, contrary to what you might expect, dishwashers use less water and energy to clean your dishes than you would if you did it by hand. Heating up water, filling your sink, rinsing your dishes, all cost a lot of energy and water, and the dishwasher simply handles this much more effectively than most people could. You can even use a short cycle or and eco cycle to further reduce the impact your dishwasher makes on the environment. My dishwasher even has a special cycle for half loads, for those rare occasions where you really need to start the dishwasher, but you can’t fill it up completely.

3. Saving soap

They work great, but they are individually wrapped in plastic, which is of course a big no no for me. I found some with dissoluble wrappers, so I think I’ll stick with these until I find something better.
I have seen eco dishwasher tabs and they seem great, but they are very expensive and simply not in my budget right now. If anyone has a recipe for home made dishwasher tabs, please share them in the comments. I’ll definitely try them out!
Hmmm, I feel a bit of research and a new blogpost coming on…

In case you where wondering, I run my dishwasher at night. In unload everything in the morning, so during the day I can put all the dirty dishes out of sight in the dishwasher. I don’t have to listen to the noise it makes, since I’ll be asleep in the other room, and I have a nice tidy kitchen during the day.
Technology can really be a good thing when it comes to making your life greener.

Cyndi
